Pixels to Paint

A drawing tool, made in p5.js, that encourages users to create mini works of art, by combining pixels and simulated paint spreading.

A decorative script uppercase B, drawn with pixels, next to a decorative pattern. Drawn in black, purple, and orange on a beige background.
A decorative pixel-based pattern using black, purple, and orange on a beige background. Some of the pixels have gradients to imitate paint spreading.

About the Project

This is a drawing tool that explores the combination of highly-controlled pixel drawing and a less controlled type of paint or ink flow. (This is still being worked out, as the ink spread effect is currently too formulaic.) This sketch is also an attempt to use some of the concepts from Tyler Hobbs' "How to Hack a Painting" essay. Future improvements include improving the shape deformation to improve the ink spread, and the addition of symmetry builders (drawing symmetrically with this tool seems to yield the best visual results).
